CATHERINE IMHOF – CARDINAL

Technique - When I was at the Ecole des Beaux Arts I preferred to study sculpture instead of painting, I was quite determined to go my own way there. I used to paint subjects that came into my head and interpret them in a certain way. Over the last 20 years I have almost completely abandoned the notion of starting with a pre-determined subject or composition in my mind because I became less and less satisfied with the result and I gradually developed the following technique:

I use oil on paper or board, very occasionally canvas and I start with a scribble on the sheet which seemingly looks like nothing at all, like something just casually thrown there. However, I have made the experience that, even though I have nothing in mind when I produce this scribble, I have to be ready and in an attentive frame of mind or else I have great difficulty developing it further.
